Books

Okay, folks. I was going to post summaries of my works-in-progress on here, but decided against it. Instead, I’m going to put up a few book reviews from time to time. Enjoy!

Taming Rafe by Susan May Warren

Bull-rider Rafe Nobel is trying to live up to the Noble name but believes he’s failing miserably. Especially when his best friend dies because of him. Oh, yeah, and when he runs his truck through a fancy hotel lobby. Katherine Breckenridge just happens to be throwing a fund raiser in that same hotel lobby, and, thanks to Rafe, a desperate effort to save her mother’s charity foundation fails. But she’s not through yet. In a last ditch effort, Katherine travels to Montana, where Rafe is licking his wounds. Together, they hatch a scheme to save the foundation, but it may cost them their hearts. And, in the end, it may cost their lives.

Taming Rafe is a fun read with plenty of romance, a book-within-a-book, and rodeo scenes so vivid you can see the cowboys thumping their chests and smell the dust as hooves fly. Don’t miss it! Taming Rafe is the second in the Noble Legacy Series, published by Tyndale.

Demon: A Memoir

The Guy I'm Not DatingUnwilling to go home to an empty apartment, Clay stops off at a café... where his life changes forever. He is approached by a man named Lucien who wants Clay—an author and editor—to write and publish his memoirs. But Lucien isn’t really a man, and the memoirs go back to before time began. Through a series of encounters with Lucien, Clay learns about the Fall and creation through a demon’s eyes. But how does the story end?

Demon: A Memoir is not as dark as it sounds. Reminiscent of Lewis’ Screwtape Letters, Tosca’s book gives a look at God and His love for us from a different perspective. And it’s a powerful one. This book makes you think, makes you ponder God’s love, and makes you wonder what if…?

Hazardous Duty by Christy Barritt

The Guy I'm Not DatingGabby St. Claire is a forensic detective wannabe who has to settle for cleaning up the crime scenes until she gets her degree…if she lives that long. When she discovers a weapon used in a recent murder, things begin to get a bit hairy. Add a handsome detective and the sweet boy next door, a tree-hugger friend and a talk show host, and you’ve got the fun characters that make up this chick lit mystery. With lots of laughs and edge-of-your-seat suspense, Christy’s debut novel placed third in the 2007 ACFW Book of the Year contest. Don’t miss Hazardous Duty, the first of the Squeaky Clean Mysteries, published by Kregel.

Miss Match by Erynn Mangum

The Guy I'm Not Dating Lauren Holbrook is a fun-loving, coffee-guzzling, chocoholic chick who doesn’t believe she’ll ever get married. But that doesn’t stop her from making sure all her friends will. Her elaborate matchmaking schemes are amazingly successful, with the help of some reluctant recruits. The question is, which of those recruits will be Lauren’s match?

A clingy and hypochondriac father, a blond Barbie who may be deeper than she appears, and other great quirky characters make up the cast of Miss Match. Add a few movie quotes and Scripture references to a fun cast and hysterical plot, and you have Erynn Mangum’s must-read debut novel. Don’t miss this one, or ReMatch, the sequel, coming out in October.

The Guy I'm Not Dating by Trish Perry

The Guy I'm Not Dating In Trish Perry’s debut novel, The Guy I’m Not Dating, Kara runs into the man of her dreams. Turns out he’s interested, too, but there’s one problem. Kara has determined to not date, to remain just friends with the guys in her life until she feels God’s nudging. Her decision is challenged when they end up going on a road trip together—along with friends, teens, and a couple little old ladies—and the result is a story of heartwarming fun.

Don’t miss this book. Really, how can you resist a title like The Guy I’m Not Dating? I bought it soon after the conference last year, and really enjoyed reading it. The characters are quirky, the message clean, and the story plain fun. And I have a feeling the sequel is Too Good To Be True.

Wounded Healer by Donna Fleisher

Wounded Healer is the first in a series focused on the lives of two women, Chris and Erin. They saw each other through Desert Storm, but there are more personal storms awaiting them. Chris has a dark secret that threatens to tear their friendship apart, but Erin refuses to give up on Chris, no matter what, because Chris’s life may be at stake…as well as her soul.

The thing I love most about this book is the challenge it presents to never give up on our friends. To carry a burden for their salvation. To love them as Jesus loves them.

An awesome cover. A gripping beginning. A story of friendship, fear, and faith, with a bit of action thrown in. What more can you ask for? Okay, romance, but author Donna Fleisher gets around to that when the time is right. You just have to keep reading the series. Don’t miss it! Homeland Heroes series by Donna Fleisher, published by Zondervan.
